So, I’ve been wanting to talk about my knitting more, but I don’t want to bore you non-knitters. So I started a new knitting blog.
And while I was fiddling around with that, I decided to move this blog too, just to streamline a bit. You can find it here now.
And as long as you’re updating your links or rss feeds (I’m not going to post here after today, and I’ll delete it in a little while) - here’s another one - Swurl. It puts everything in one place - both blogs, flickr… you can even see which movies I’m renting from netflix and my silly status updates via facebook. It’s pretty cool.
See ya on the other side!

Happy Anniversary, Hubster.
Patrick and
Leila are out of town this week, so we offered to take care of their cat, Barrow. To be totally honest, I’ve never had a cat other than Cricket, and I really don’t know too much about them, because from what I gather, Cricket is not exactly a “normal” cat.
For the most part it’s gone ok - a lot of hissing, not too much getting along… but no blood drawn, which as far as I’m concerned means we’re coming out ahead. We did have to shut Barrow in one of the bedrooms when we went to work yesterday - on Wednesday we left them together and when we came home, Cricket had a new “trick” to show us. She climbed to the top of our headboard and balanced there, which she’s never done before… I’m pretty sure Barrow had her terrified enough to back her up into the corner, so to speak. Not that Barrow is a terrifying cat - he’s pretty darn mellow - it’s just that Cricket is, well, scared of EVERYTHING.
I take a shortcut through a small park on my walk between work and the subway - I can cut across diagonally instead of walking around the perimeter.
This evening as I was leaving work (it was just about dusk) I realized that I was surrounded by fireflies. It was really lovely. And to see the other people pointing and smiling and enjoying them as well was really nice.
And when I got home Joe was watching Firefly on DVD. Silly!
I find puns amusing, I’m not going to lie. Recently, I keep hearing silly ones at the store, some intentional, some not.
1. Ph was untangling a ball of yarn. Someone says to her, “I can’t believe you’re doing that - I hate it!” To which Ph replies, “I do it for therapy.” I cannot resist this perfect set up, and shout “Does it help you unwind??”
2. When asked about a hat pattern used for a sample, B says “I just did it off the top of my head!”
3. A customer went a few dollars over budget, and is saying how it’s going to come out of her food money… “Or maybe I’ll just have extra fiber!”
OK, ok, you can stop groaning now. And if you don’t find these funny, well, you haven’t been spending enough time at yarn shops.
- We don’t seem to be getting mail reliably at our apartment… so if you’ve sent me something and I haven’t acknowledged it, it might not have made it. Send me an email if you want to check. Better to send me and Joe stuff at our respective workplaces for now.
- I was so, so sick for about 2 weeks. It was just a cold, but a really really bad one. My birthday was a bit of a bust - canceled due to illness. Joe made it up to me by inviting my friends out to dinner as a surprise the following week.
It is raining so much lately. Good thing I have new wellies!
- We FINALLY have booked our tickets for our “honeymoon” - we’re going to Europe (London, for sure, the rest is up in the air right now) for 2 weeks in September.
- We’re going to New Mexico in a couple weeks, for a long weekend.
- I have been knitting, knitting, knitting. (See Elijah, right)
- Leila has a new blog called Needle and Dime (still no mobile phone, though).
- My sister is getting married in October. (Old news but I’m throwing it out there.)
- I’m thinking about joining zipcar - anybody have any thoughts on that?
What?! I’m posting a recipe?? Yes, it’s true. I had a cooking fit this weekend, making both these pancakes and some cinnamon buns at Joe’s request. He had a gig on friday, and I’m proud of how well they’re doing, this was the biggest turn out yet. I hope that it’s a sign of things to come. ROCKSTAR!
This recipe is a variation on my dad’s go-to pancake recipe from an old copy of the New York Times Cookbook - if you want plain pancakes (I’m actually surprised I haven’t already posted this recipe, since I know I’ve posted several recipes for pancakes) just take out the cocoa and sugar.
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup sugar (or your choice of sweetener)
- 1 egg
- 3/4 - 1 1/4 cups milk (soy is fine)
- 3 tablespoons oil
- optional: chocolate chips
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, then stir in the wet. Start with the least amount of milk, and add a little at a time until it’s the consistency you like. (Runny batter = flat pancakes, stiff batter = tall puffy pancakes)
Fry on a buttered griddle over medium heat. Ladle a spoonful of batter out, and drop a handful of chocolate chips into the batter. (7 - 10 chips should do it.) Flip when bubbles form and stay around the edges.
Serve with maple syrup for MAXIMUM SUGAR OVERLOAD.
In no particular order:
Plus some other things that are too embarrassing to post on a public blog…
On friday, Joe and I went to see Mike Doughty play at the Highline Ballroom in Chelsea. The venue was really nice - intimate but not tiny. The sound quality wasn’t awesome, most of the songs were a little on the “mushy” side.
For those of you who don’t know who Mike Doughty is, he used to be the singer for Soul Coughing but he’s got several solo albums. (If you want to check out a couple of songs on iTunes or whatever, my favorites are “Nectarine” from Golden Delicious - the newest album - and “I Hear the Bells” from Haughty Melodic. But really, they’re all good.)
EDIT: Joe says I should really include a review of the show. My memory’s not so good so I can’t go into in-depth specifics like he does on his blog… but I loved it. Mike Doughty is so clever, which you can tell by his crazy lyrics - and his on-stage banter was hilarious. The crowd was fun, dancing and enjoying themselves. I had a great time.
{full 101/1001 list}
So listen, I know I never post anymore. But here’s the thing - all I ever do/talk about is knitting, and I REALLY don’t want this to become a knitting blog… but it has, instead, become a nothing blog.
Apologies.
I’ll be back when I think of something interesting to talk about.
In the mean time, I can be found on flickr - I update that at least weekly. (Link at top.)
