What?! I’m posting a recipe?? Yes, it’s true. I had a cooking fit this weekend, making both these pancakes and some cinnamon buns at Joe’s request. He had a gig on friday, and I’m proud of how well they’re doing, this was the biggest turn out yet. I hope that it’s a sign of things to come. ROCKSTAR!
This recipe is a variation on my dad’s go-to pancake recipe from an old copy of the New York Times Cookbook - if you want plain pancakes (I’m actually surprised I haven’t already posted this recipe, since I know I’ve posted several recipes for pancakes) just take out the cocoa and sugar.
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup sugar (or your choice of sweetener)
- 1 egg
- 3/4 - 1 1/4 cups milk (soy is fine)
- 3 tablespoons oil
- optional: chocolate chips
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, then stir in the wet. Start with the least amount of milk, and add a little at a time until it’s the consistency you like. (Runny batter = flat pancakes, stiff batter = tall puffy pancakes)
Fry on a buttered griddle over medium heat. Ladle a spoonful of batter out, and drop a handful of chocolate chips into the batter. (7 - 10 chips should do it.) Flip when bubbles form and stay around the edges.
Serve with maple syrup for MAXIMUM SUGAR OVERLOAD.

Plus some other things that are too embarrassing to post on a public blog…
On friday, Joe and I went to see Mike Doughty play at the Highline Ballroom in Chelsea. The venue was really nice - intimate but not tiny. The sound quality wasn’t awesome, most of the songs were a little on the “mushy” side.
For those of you who don’t know who Mike Doughty is, he used to be the singer for Soul Coughing but he’s got several solo albums. (If you want to check out a couple of songs on iTunes or whatever, my favorites are “Nectarine” from Golden Delicious - the newest album - and “I Hear the Bells” from Haughty Melodic. But really, they’re all good.)
EDIT: Joe says I should really include a review of the show. My memory’s not so good so I can’t go into in-depth specifics like he does on his blog… but I loved it. Mike Doughty is so clever, which you can tell by his crazy lyrics - and his on-stage banter was hilarious. The crowd was fun, dancing and enjoying themselves. I had a great time.

So listen, I know I never post anymore. But here’s the thing - all I ever do/talk about is knitting, and I REALLY don’t want this to become a knitting blog… but it has, instead, become a nothing blog.
Apologies.
I’ll be back when I think of something interesting to talk about.
In the mean time, I can be found on flickr - I update that at least weekly. (Link at top.)
Earlier today, watching a dvd on Joe’s iMac:
J: I love my computer!
Me: More than you love me??
J: It’s like apples and oranges…
Me: *groan* How long have you been waiting to say that?
J: Oh, haha! It’s an apple and you’re like an orange! Whoops!
My friend Amanda and I were supposed to have a craft day yesterday, but she called and asked if I’d rather go see WACK! at P.S.1 - I was excited since I hadn’t been there since I was a freshman in college. I think it was my favorite field trip we went on in college - it was so out there.
It’s an old public school - the building itself is amazing. Giant, brick, with turrets and gables. It’s beautiful. When I went in college, it was still fairly new I think, and basically they were giving contemporary artists space to just go crazy. Every space had some sort of installation. There was stuff in the bathrooms, the boiler room, the staircases, the roof. You could just explore and go through any door that wasn’t locked. It was really intense and amazing.
This time, the vast majority of the museum was dedicated to WACK!, which is a collection of Feminist art, mostly from the 70s. I believe it is a touring exhibition. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. The show itself was interesting, but I felt like it would be a better fit at a different museum, perhaps. It felt a little more like a traditional museum show, stuff that I’ve seen in text books and slide lectures. What I liked about it before was that it was people you hadn’t heard of, doing things never seen before. But maybe P.S.1 is just different now, a bit less edgy I guess. It has after all, been 7 years since I was last there.
I’m not writing P.S.1 off completely just yet, but I’d like to see what a different exhibit has to offer.
I cannot believe this article.
Insurance companies shouldn’t be allowed to pull this sort of bullshit, it’s so unfair. First, that people have to LIE TO THEIR DOCTORS to get the sort of care they need, and that the companies can drop people at all.
This is why we need a complete overhaul of the current health care system. Under what circumstances does “you’re too sick for health insurance” make any sense at all?? I believe health care should be a right, not a privilege. Maybe I’m an idealist, but this stuff gets me really upset.
Traditional Mardi Gras meal on my dad’s side - English pancakes. Which are simply crepes (French, I know) with sugar and lemon juice. And if you recall, our other family tradition is to call each other and sing the pancake song.
You know, as we were cooking, I was musing about how funny it is that my family has a tradition for pancake tuesday, and Joe couldn’t really remember one for his family, even though they are the ones who observe Lent.
As for the voting - I’m just going to say I voted creatively and leave it at that.
Earlier today, on the phone with dad: “I hate reality shows, not just because they’re stupid, but also because, reality? I have enough of that.”
I am so bummed out that Edwards has dropped out.
I guess I don’t have anything else to say.
